분석 역사 초기에는 원인과 치료 모두에서 affect가 매우 중요한 역할을 했다.
ex) catharsis, abreaction
그러나 instinct 이론이 발달하면서 conflict에 밀려남.
structural theory 가 발달하면서 더욱 밀려남.
biologic component, neuroscience를 고려하지 않을 수 없기 때문에 현대에는 개념 자체가 모호해지기도 함.
그럼에도 affect 는 중요하다.
'controlled, modulated, tamed' affect 는 strong ego 와 관련되어 있다.
affect 는 instinctual component +외부사건을 잘 반영한다.
Freud 때부터 affect 중 anxiety 가 특히 강조되어 왔다.
anxiety는 ego가 loss of love, castration, punishment 와 같은 impending danger 에 대해 signal을 주는 것이다. = signal theory of anxiety
